Light business jets take aviation to a new high

New Delhi: India’s business jet market is seeing a spurt in sales, led by demand for entry-level ‘light jets’ that can be purchased for Rs.16 crore, or just Rs.4 crore more than a luxury car brand such as Bugatti Veyron.
The demand signals an increasing number of smaller companies and high networth individuals can now afford to buy private jets or rent them for business or leisure trips, say experts.
India has the largest fleet of business jets in Asia at 122, up from 26 in 2005. Another 125 business jets are on order, of which at least 40 are light jets—smaller-cabin jets that can fly four-six people and are light in weight, according to the consultancy Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation.
This month, Mumbai-based Invision Air Pvt. Ltd will induct India’s first light jet, Embraer Phenom 100. The chartered carrier has ordered 19 more jets that it will add to its fleet gradually, said Jayant Nadkarni, a director at Invision Air.
In November, Bangalore-based Aviators (India) Pvt. Ltd, a 17-year-old chartered carrier, is expecting delivery of a Phenom 100 light aircraft.
Brazilian aircraft maker Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica SA (Embraer) has sold 170 Phenom jets. Another 380 are on order, including 40 in India, said Alex Glock, vice-president, marketing and sales, Embraer Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.
Cessna Aircraft Co.’s Mustang is its main rival, but Honda Aircraft Co. and the Mitsubishi group also have plans to enter the market. Cessna has developed a Mustang variant for India to meet the strict guidelines of the regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), said Santosh Deshpande, executive vice-president, Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd, which sells Cessna aircraft in the country.

Air India hikes ad spend 40% to revamp brand

New Delhi: State-owned carrier, National Aviation Company of India Limited (Nacil) or Air India, is set to launch an advertising blitzkreig having shortlisted four agencies to resurrect the brand image of the airline which has taken a beating following huge losses and flash strike by its employees.
These four agencies — Draft FCB Ulka, Inter Publicity Private Limited, Crayons Advertising and Saatchi and Saatchi — were narrowed down this month from a pool of 36, an airline official told The Indian Express. For this purpose the airline has also upped its budget from Rs 50 crore per annum to around Rs 70 crore per annum, the source added.
These four agencies have been selected on the panel for a period of three years during which they will take care of external communication needs of the airline.

Merger leaves Air India staff perplexed

Mumbai: There’s no end to the confusion among the employees of the country’s national carrier about their roles after the merger of Air India, Indian Airline and Air India Express into National Aviation Company International Limited (NACIL).
The three airlines, which were merged in 2007 but continued to function as separate entities, have been forced to function as a single entity again due to lack of cockpit crew and expiry of aircraft lease.
Since last week, Air India (AI) has been operating four flights which were earlier operated by Indian Airline and Air India Express (AIE). AIE is experiencing a shortage of cockpit crew (pilots), which has led them to close a number of routes.
AI will also operate on the Mumbai-Chennai-Singapore route with the beginning of the winter schedule from October 25.
Moreover, even the routes operated by Indian Airlines to neighbouring countries like Shanghai will go to AI this winter.

Pilot’s death a tragedy: Expert

Doha: A top Middle East aviation official yesterday said the death of a pilot on a Qatar Airways flight (QR645) was a tragedy that could happen to any airline.
Captain Nikolaos Antypas, Advisor and General Secretary of the Middle East Safety Roadmap, said it was a tragedy that could happen any day and major airlines like Qatar Airways are always prepared to respond to such emergencies.
“Co-pilots are always trained to take charge in such situations,” Antypas told The Peninsula.
Meanwhile, the family of the Indian pilot of Qatar Airways’ flight QR645, who died en route to Doha from Manila early on Wednesday, left for Mumbai last evening to perform his last rites. The body of Ajay Kukreja was scheduled to be flown to Mumbai directly from Kuala Lumpur.
Senior officials of Qatar Airways were said to have seen off Kukreja’s widow and two children at the premium terminal of the Doha International Airport. Kukreja’s funeral is expected to be held in Mumbai today.

Ministry, AERA split over tariffs

New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry has sought a clarification from the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) for allegedly overstepping its mandate on fixing aeronautical tariff. The development follows a recent disagreement between the two over a suitable methodology to fix airport tariff across the major airports.
“As per the AERA Act, the regulator can determine tariff only at major airports where annual traffic is in excess of 1.5 million. Since air navigation services (AN) are provided across the airports irrespective of major or non-major, the AERA can not regulate this,” a ministry official told FE.
However, an AERA official said: “There is no question of overreaching our jurisdiction. AERA regulates aeronautical tariff including ANS charges at 14 major airports on the basis of the airport operator’s cost and revenue. The AAI had given some practical difficulty in segregating the cost of air navigation services for different airports since the infrastructure is common. On this, we asked them (AAI) to keep ANS charges for other airports same to those of 14 airports. Since this is a new area, we keep consulting the ministry and sort out the issues.”
“The ANS providers are typically monopolies as there can only be one ANS provider for any given airspace. In the case of India, AAI has sole control over Indian airspace,” International Air Transport Association country director Amitabh Khosla said.

Bird hit: Airlines fume over AAI’s failure

Chennai: Birds and aviation safety do not make the best of partners and there’s reason enough. On Monday, a Jet Airways flight from Chennai to Kolkata did a U-turn after taking off for its destination at 7.45am. The pilot found errorneous readings on his instrument and had to return the flight in an emergency after having touched 2,000 feet as his aircraft had been hit by a bird leading to engine damage.
More than five incidents of bird hit have come to notice at the Chennai Airport and other airports in the southern region.
Another Jet flight from Hyderabad to Chennai was recently hit by a bird on its approach, causing considerable delay to the flight — this was the fourth such incident that Jet alone had reported in the last one week. Last Saturday, a Spicejet aircraft was grounded in Madurai after being hit by a bird, leaving passengers in Chennai fuming as the same aircraft was supposed to take them to Delhi and the airline had no alternative options. Kingfisher reported two incidents of bird hit in the last 10 days and Etihad Airline reported a similar complaint on October 4. Kingfisher had reported three more such incidents in September.
When the issue was raked up at the runway safety committee meeting that took place on Thursday at the Chennai Airport, AAI officials were on the defensive.
“We have been doing the needful at the airport.
Even field visits in the airport vicinity have been increased from once a year to once in six months,” an airport official said. However, Airline operators feel that this is not enough.

Threat - Advocate Handling Air Crash Claims Postpones Visit

Mangalore: Reportedly, advocate Nanavati, representing Mulla and Mulla Company, which is processing air crash claims relating to the crash of Air India Express flight from Dubai at the local airport on May 22 this year, has received anonymous threats. The policemen have been investigating the matter.
It is learnt that Nanavati, who was scheduled to visit the city on Tuesday October 12, cancelled his programme in view of the threat perception. It may be recalled that the memorial set up at the crash site for the victims of the crash had recently been vandalized by unknown miscreants a few days ago. One of the theories about this destructive act was that those who were angry about Air India had committed this act.

Delhi airport’s T3 to welcome domestic flights from Oct 30

New Delhi: After missing two deadlines, the GMR Group-led Delhi International Airport (DIAL) would shift part of the domestic operation to the new terminal,T3, on October 30. With this, air travellers flying by full-service carriers — Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines — would have to drive a few more kilometres to catch their flights.
“The full-service carriers along with their low-cost arms will shift to the T3 on October 30,” a senior DIAL official told FE.
The airport operator is expected to get 220 kva substation from Delhi Transco besides the required water supply from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) ahead of the awaited shift.
“We should get everything (electricity and water line) in place in the next 15 days. The only concern is connectivity by Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has said the airport line will start in the next 20 days but my feeling is it will take as many as 45 days” the official said.
The new airport expressline was expected to begin ahead of Commonwealth Games in the Capital which kicked off on October 3.
After the first phase of shifting domestic operations of full-service carriers, the low-cost airlines like SpiceJet and IndiGo are also proposed to be moved to the new terminal.
